About

Carla DeSantis professional scholarly editor
I love language and words and books, and have turned this love into a business, helping authors to perfect their written message and help their readers access that information. I am an editor, indexer, and translator who specializes in nonfiction scholarly and academic works, and I help professors, scholars, authors, and publishers polish their work for publication. I focus on the details so you don't have to!

Because of my experience in academia, research, and publishing, I can confidently handle scholarly apparatus and complex works with the expert care that academic authors need.

Based in Toronto, Canada, I have been a freelance editor since 2011, specializing in humanities, social sciences, and business materials. In addition, I have much experience working with multilingual texts (e.g. English, Italian, Spanish, Latin, Ancient Greek). I earned a PhD in medieval Latin and Romance Philology from the University of Toronto and also hold an MA in classical Latin and a BA in Classics and Spanish from the University of Toronto. My advanced linguistic training in several languages makes me attuned in a unique way to correct expression and grammatical precision in English.

My clients have included University of Toronto Press, University of California Press, Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, the Royal Ontario Museum, Journal of West Indian Literature, Canadian Scholars' Press, University of Toronto Research Services, and individual scholars.

As someone who has always gravitated towards language and words, I am an editor with a keen eye for detail, originally trained in the exacting skill of editing medieval Latin manuscripts - a skill that has well prepared me for polishing scholars’ and other authors' work with precision and correctness for publication. In addition to my university-level teaching experience, I am myself a published author with experience in managing a large writing project from research and writing to editing, indexing, and proofhandling.

As a dual U.S./Canadian citizen, I am available for telecommuting employment in both countries.

HOW I GOT STARTED AS AN EDITOR

Personal/Interests

I live with my husband, three children, and dog Thea in Toronto. When I'm not doing editorial work, I like to read fiction, pursue good food, play the piano, keep fit with Pilates, and peruse museums. I seem to gravitate especially to anything old that is filled with history, so I am particularly fascinated by archaeology and ruins. When possible, I like to get away to the beautiful shores of Lake Huron (Canada's Caribbean!) or one of the many other lakes in Ontario. I love to travel, especially to any place by the water, Italy, Mexico, and Costa Rica, where I get to indulge in practicing Italian and Spanish.
